KNOWING WHEN TO "PUSH THE STOP BUTTON"

On August 24, 2012, the West Region Central Services department celebrated 20 Years of No Loss Time and 4 Years with No incidents! The Central Services repair and maintenance crews work hard to support the entire Region, helping to keep our plants operational and productive. Members of the Central Services team often travel on short notice, work weekends or evenings, while always maintaining safe work habits and practices. Each employee understands the risks associated with performing these functions, and strives to be one step ahead to keep themselves and their co-workers safe.

At Vulcan, each employee has individual responsibility and the authority to ensure that the safety requirements associated with all assignments are followed. This means that all employees have the following responsibilities:

• To follow all safe operating procedures including all safety rules and regulations

• To stop any work that poses an imminent danger to an employee or to others ("Push the STOP Button") to correct unsafe work behavior, whenever necessary

• To report unsafe conditions immediately to a supervisor

• To warn co-workers about defective equipment and other hazards

• To take part in regular safety and health training

• To review each assignment in advance for hazard recognition

• To adopt behavior-based safety concepts

• To participate in workplace safety inspections including shift inspections, pre- and post-shift inspections, and pre- and post-trip inspections

• To participate in pre-job meetings

• To review emergency evacuation plans and assembly instructions at the workplace

• To observe safety and health related signs, posters, warning signals and directions

Congratulations to the Central Services Team for this extraordinary achievement!
